Review Summary:

The Kershaw Skyline knife is a great medium size pocket knife for every day carry (EDC). It does not have assist open but is so smooth you don't need it. A flick of your wrist and the blade snaps into place. Comes very sharp out of the box and is easy to keep a sharp edge. It sits a little higher in my pocket than I prefer, but for an affordable, midsize, pocket knife, you won't find much better than the Kershaw Skyline.

Kershaw Skyline Knife – The best EDC knife

5star

Kershaw Skyline pocket knife is a great knife, fairly low profile, very sharp, easy open. I love this Skyline knife. It is my EDC (every day carry) knife. The clip allows knife to sit fairly low in my pocket so tip doesn’t stick out too much (about 1/2″) and shout “I’m carrying a knife!” as many of my other knives do. I like it to be discreet. The Kershaw Skyline Knife is not an assist opening knife, which initially I wasn’t sure about since I like assisted opening knives — but this knife is so smooth, it will flick open with minimal effort using the flipper. The blade comes extremely sharp. It is perfect size for EDC. I’ve used it to open packages, cut up cardboard boxes, scrape crap off my shoes, cut fruit… blade is still sharp. It slices through oranges and other fruit like a hot knife through butter.

Kershaw Skyline Knife

Some people get hung up on minute details about their knives… handle texture, grooves on top of blade (jimp), etc…. but for the average knife owner, you just want a sharp blade that is easy to sharpen, that opens and closes easily, and quality made. The Skyline does this. My only semi-complaint would be the center lock bar is a little low, so is a little harder to push to the side to release the blade to close it… very minor complaint.

It opens with a flipper on the back edge of the knife. You push down on the flipper and give your wrist a little flick. The action is VERY smooth. One hand opening. Once open the center slide lock securely keeps blade from folding back in. To release the blade, just push the center lock over and fold blade back into the handle. Can be done with one hand.

I was hesitant to pay $40 for this knife, but read good reviews, and nuttnfancy raved about it on Youtube… so I splurged. Glad I did. This knife and my smaller SOG Flash I pocket knife are my 2 favorites and I normally carry either when wearing jeans, and just the SOG when wearing dress slacks.

Kershaw Skyline Knife with Textured Black G-10 Handle

When you first get it, you may get frustrated with the flipper not opening the knife as fast or full as you want it to. Give it time to break in and practice your wrist flick and before you know it, you can pull from your pocket and flick it open like a pro.

  • Steel: Sandvik 14C28N bead-blasted finish
  • Handle: Textured black G-10
  • Blade length: 3-1/8 inches
  • Closed length: 4-1/4 inches
  • Overall length: 7-3/8 inches
  • Weight: 2.3 ounces

Kershaw Skyline is very lightweight

The Kershaw Skyline Knife is so lightweight you will not even know it is in your pocket. I never used to carry a knife, then about a year ago became a knife addict. 🙂  I researched and researched, read blogs, watched videos, and started buying pocket knives. I don’t have a huge collection, but of the knives I do have, the Kershaw Skyline and the SOG Flash I are my 2 favorites. For a larger, heavier knife, I love my Kershaw Tremor. … I will review these knives later.

The Kershaw Skyline knife is the best EDC knife I own. The perfect Father’s Day gift under $50! Any dad will love this knife… 🙂

In this price range (under $50) you won’t find a better knife. Amazon tends to have the best knife prices around and most are free shipping if you have a Prime account. Walmart has good prices, but not as good as Amazon. Amazon frequently offers extra incentives on Kershaw knives… $10-$15 off if order is over $50 (about 2 knives)… almost like getting the 2nd knife 1/2 price.

  1. The knife has it’s style. When you see it you will see how much value is built in this knife.

  2. I am just passioned on how it feels opening when you push on the flipper. I think about price – if you need knife it is worth.

  3. Nice Kershaw pocket knife review, I personally like Spyderco pocket knife, I own 2 of the knives since when I still in childhood time. Maybe next time will try to look for Kershaw knife for my collection.

    • Thanks for your comment, Michael. Spyderco has a great reputation. I have the Spyderco Tenacious on my short list. For the money, I don’t think you can go wrong with Spyderco, Kershaw, SOG, or several of the other key players in the pocket knife field.

  4. Hey Bob, thanks for the review! I have yet to own a Kershaw but I’m considering one for the next addition to my collection. I’m similar to you, I was never particularly into knives before, although I always carries a Swiss Army Knife, but a couple of years ago I started getting a lot more into them.

Would you recommend this model as a good first Kershaw? Thanks and take care!

    • Thanks for posting Dave. My 2 favorite knives are the Kershaw Skyline knife and the SOG Flash 1 knife which is smaller than the Skyline. I also own the Kershaw Tremor which is larger and has assisted opening. But to answer your question… I would highly recommend the Skyline as your first Kershaw. You’ll love it. Not too big or heavy for EDC. It does ride a little high out of the pocket. That’s why my first choice would be the SOG Flash 1. I also understand the Flash 2 is nice. I don’t own that many Kershaws… but based on my experience and reading other reviews, the Skyline rates right up there. It opens VERY smoothly without assist… and sharpens up nicely.

      • Thanks Bob! I’ve been checking out the Kershaws for a few weeks now and I’ll definitely be picking one of them to purchase next. I’m gonna chech out teh Skyline a bit better next. Thanks for the info & I love your site!

  5. Excellent sharing. Thanks a lot!
The Sandvik 14C28N steel is pretty tough and smooth. I really like it.
It has a high resistance to corrosion and the ergonomics of the knife are definitely a plus.

  6. Thanks Bill… I have the SOG Flash 1, which is probably my favorite EDC. Small, sits low in pocket, sharp, easy open. Haven’t tried the SOG Flash II or Benchmade 710. Don’t own a Benchmade – although I hear they are great knives, their cost points are usually a little more than I want to spend. Maybe I’ll try the Benchmade 710 one day.

    Thanks for commenting.

  7. Hey Bob, nice review. The Kershaw Skyline is one of my favorite pocket knives. Have you tried the SOG Flash II or Benchmade 710? In my opinion, those might be the best out there.

  8. Thanks for comment, Matt. I’ve been impressed with the smoothness in opening the Kershaw Skyline and how well the blade stays sharp and holds an edge. I have it so sharp it will literally shave the hair off my arm like a razor – no pull or drag.

Thanks again for visiting and leaving a comment.

  9. Thanks for sharing. That Sandvik 14C28N steel is pretty nice.
I own a Kershaw Skyline and many times have basically soaked the knife in sweat yet found no corrosion whatsoever. Very nice quality while not breaking the bank.
